I Received a Phone Call Today About a Friends PassingWho's in Control of Your Life and Your Time?I received a phone call today about a friends passing. She had been sick for quite awhile so it came as no surprise. In some respects it came as a relief. A relief in knowing that she would not have to continue living with the pain she must have been feeling as she fought the good fight.
She is the first of my inner circle to pass on. With her passing comes the realization that we are mortal. That my generation will not live on this earth forever. (There was a time in the early 60's that we thought we might.) But she will live on. She will live on in the minds and hearts of the people who came to know her. Who came to love her and appreciate her for the strong, determined, independent person she was.
I believe there aren't any negatives in life. Everything that happens around us happens for a reason. My friends passing forced me to re-assess what I was doing with my life. It made me re-examine the choices I made. To question my life's plan. That's the one thing we all have in common. We have a choice. It's 100% in our control. It's the one thing that no one can take away from us. How do you want to live your life? What is your life plan? Where do you want to be in 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years from now? Are you working your life plan? Are you living your dream? People seem to take more time planning their next vacation then they do the next 1 to 5 years of their lives. If you fail to plan don't be surprised where you end up. Without a plan you're saying anywhere will do. Is that where you want to be? Just anywhere! We all start out with the same 168 hours in a week. Have you blocked off some of that time to work your plan? You must take some time for yourself. You owe yourself that much. Time management is now part of the curriculum for our first year College students. I teach it as part of their Skills for Success course. Our Time Mastery & Personal Effectiveness workshop is one of our most requested. Time is a precious gift. It's like children. You don't realize it until after they're gone. I'm reminded of a quote by Peter F. Drucker: "You can wait for a miracle. Miracles are great but they are so unpredictable. You just never know when they are going to come along." You can sit back and hope for a miracle and hope that everything's going to work out. Remember you have a choice. It's 100% in your control. Who is in control of your life and your time? |
