I recently conducted a workshop for managers and employees of a major coffee retailer in Canada and they told me that they still get customers who request they put their hot coffee in a brown paper bag so it's easier to carry. (Yes they do offer a carrying tray. As for me, I always ask them to double cup.) Common sense? I'm still not convinced there is any.
I originally purchased Dr. Phil's book because of his success both as an author and television host. I wanted to find out for myself what the fuss was about. I watch his show now and again because I like his tell it like it is, don't sugar coat it style. (He uses humour to help soften the blow.) His book, Life Strategies - Doing What Works, Doing What Matters published by Hyperion Books is written in the same tongue-n-cheek style that he uses on television.
His message, both in this book, and on his TV show is the same. "If what you're doing isn't working, you might as well at least consider an alternative approach. You can start by admitting you may not know everything you need to in order to get what you want." This book is about helping you put together your "Life Plan". Like any plan you first must decide where it is you want to end up. As Dr. Phil puts it "You have to name it before you can claim it". You first must become very clear on what it is you want to accomplish in your life. Once you've become very clear on what it is you want and how you want to live your life, you can then put the plan together to help you get there.
You are in charge of you. You are the CEO of your own company. You are You Inc. Dr. Phil's Life Law #5: "Life rewards action. Make careful decisions and then pull the trigger." Life Strategies is based on his Ten Laws of Life. He dedicates a chapter to each Life Law and explains in detail how to go about incorporating them into your life. Dr. Phil included assignments throughout the book to help reinforce what he is saying, forcing you to answer some tough questions about you. He asks you to be brutally honest with yourself, he asks you to get real. I'd like to be a millionaire but the likely-hood of that happening is slim to slimmer. What do you truly believe is attainable?
As Dr. Phil puts it: "Life Laws are the rules of the game. No one is going to ask you if you think these laws are fair, or if you think they should exist. Like the law of gravity, they simply are. You don't get a vote. You can ignore them and stumble along, wondering why you never seem to succeed; or you can learn them, and live effectively."
Enough said. Stop agonising over the person you've become, and start working your plan to become the person you want to be. Start living your life. I hope you enjoy the read.
