The language of DiSC® is based on Dr. William Marston's two-axis, four-dimensional model of our behavioural tendancies. Marston believed we look upon our environment as either favourable, or unfavourable, and that this contributes to how we react to our environment. His influential, and acclaimed book, Emotions of Normal People, explained how our needs-driven behaviour could be understood as four distinct styles of behaviour.

In the mid 1950's, William Clark further developed the Marston theory. He utilized the simple matrix titled DISC, identifying the factors that comprise each of our individual personalities within four styles.

D The D is for Dominant style. This individual is determined, straightforward and motivated by competitive opportunities. This person is direct and assertive and likes to be in charge.

I The I is for Interactive style. This individual focuses his or her energies on others. This individual tends to be casual, bubbly, talkative, eager to please people and seeks social recognition.

S The S is for Steadiness style. This individual is predictable, low-key and typically follows through on matters because of the high need for stability. This person prefers listening and doing (rather than talking or exploring new ideas).

C The C is for Conscientious style. This individual likes things done the right way as they see it. This person has a strong need for caution in order to fulfill his or her personal concern for accuracy.
