Cats Can Teach You a Thing or Two About Managing People I was never a fan of cats growing up. It wasn’t because I didn’t like them – I just never had much use for them. I mean – what’s the point? They don’t fetch things – They don’t sit on command, roll over or play dead. And most of the time cats don’t come to you when you call them. However, like people - cat’s can be managed – you just need to manage them differently then dogs. Find out how - Read more.

QUESTION: What is the purpose of writing this book? (Managers Not MBA’s by Henry Mintzberg) I’m an MBA student so I’d like to know. – Muhammad

ANSWER: Great question Muhammad. I think that Mintzberg was trying to point out some of the failings of most MBA programs in the hope that business schools would re-evaluate and update their programs to be more in tune with the realities of 21st. Century- management practices. Keep in mind that these programs where first developed in the early 1950’s. As you know - a great deal has changed since then.

Henry Mintzberg, the author of the book – “Managers Not MBA’s – A hard look at the soft practice of managing and management development” - and a Professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada – suggests that theory is great – but, being able to apply it is even better. He contends, and I agree, that unless MBA Graduate Students learn how to communicate and interact more effectively with their clients and colleagues – then what they know will mean absolutely nothing. Unless MBA Graduate Students learn how to communicate and interact more effectively with their clients and colleagues they will have a difficult time trying to put their theories into practice.

Daniel Goldman in his ground breaking book – “Working with Emotional Intelligence” – suggests that EQ (Emotional Intelligence) is more important then IQ. Goldman points out that the rules about managing people and processes today have little to do with what students are being taught in school; academic abilities are largely irrelevant to this new standard. We are graduating students who are technically competent at what they know. They know what they know and they know it very well. However, what we aren’t teaching them are soft-skills.

I wish you nothing but the very best. I hope that you achieve all that you aspire to achieve. Your education is the foundation to your future success. Never loose your thirst for knowledge and understanding.

If you haven’t done so already, please take a moment and read my review of Mintzberg’s book. It may answer more of your questions. Managers Not MBA’s – A hard look at the soft practice of managing and management development. - Kindest Regards, Brian
