WHMIS Facilitator's Training Kit
The Hazardous Materials Information System, known as WHMIS, came into effect in 1988. This Canada-wide system was developed by the Federal Government and adopted by all Provinces on the belief that Workers have a “Right to Know” about the hazards that may be associated with certain chemicals used and stored in the workplace and more importantly, what steps they should take to protect themselves against the dangers of over exposure. All Employers must ensure that their Workers receive WHMIS training, and Employers must review their WHMIS training program and assess their Workers level of knowledge annually.
WHMIS has three main regulatory components:
- Labels
All hazardous materials and controlled products must be labelled – warning users of the potential dangers associated with handling/using the product.
- MSDS
Suppliers must provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each hazardous product sold that lists the product’s ingredients, potential risk, first aid measures and procedures for the safe handling and storage of that product.
- Education
Employers must provide the necessary training and instruction to all employees on how to use WHMIS to protect themselves and their fellow workers.
