WHMIS Facilitator's Training Kit

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System known as WHMIS came into effect in 1988. This Canada-wide system was developed by the federal government and adopted by all provinces on the belief that all workers have a right to know about the hazards that may be associated with certain chemicals used and stored in the workplace and, more importantly, what steps they should take to protect themselves against the dangers of over-exposure. All employers must ensure that their workers receive WHMIS training, and employers must review their WHMIS training program and assess their workers' level of knowledge every year.

WHMIS is based on three regulatory elements:

• Labels
  Labels designed to alert the worker that the container contains a hazardous product or substance must be affixed to all hazardous products being sold.



• Suppliers
  Suppliers must provide a Material Safety Data Sheet for each hazardous product sold that outlines the product's potentially hazardous ingredients, and procedures for the safe handling and storage of that product.



• Workers
  Workers must be trained on how to use the System so that they can protect themselves against being potentially exposed to a hazardous product.
